Sabrina Sandhu is Business Development Manager at psLondon and Studio Hansa (our sister moving visual content) agency. She's the definition of a people person, which is incredibly fitting for her role, a bit of an adrenaline junkie (also quite fitting) and above all, a fantastic mum to her gorgeous son, which is, of course, her favourite role to date. Our conversation began with what Sabrina does here at psLondon and what she enjoys most about her work.

SS: I'm Business Development Manager at psLondon and Studio Hansa. I would best describe my role as continuously creating and maintaining incredible relationships with people across our industry. I tell people about who we are, what we stand for and how we can add value to their brands. PS is an agency that creatively solves problems for people, businesses and not-for-profit organisations and delivers incredible results; I'm not hesitant to let the world know about it.

I love my role because I know the team delivers incredible results; they've created award-winning campaigns for some big names with tangible results (and we love tangible results).

These are all very valid reasons for loving what you do here. You're a long-term psLondoner, and have left us and then come back to us - what makes you keep coming back?

SS: I love the honesty and integrity at psLondon, and I genuinely believe that your voice is heard in whatever position you have here. The company has an open-door policy, which translates from the management team throughout. Everyone at psLondon is a master in what they do, and it gives me absolute confidence while selling us as a team just as much as the work we are producing. So if a prospective client has never heard of us before, once we've connected and managed to have a chat, we can leave a real impression.

You are the queen of building these types of authentic relationships - so much more than simply sales; you understand people's needs and challenges and help them find solutions. What advice can you offer to people wanting to build more meaningful relationships?

"Honesty is imperative to me in any relationship, and without honesty, any relationship is doomed to fail."

SS: So whether it's with your family, your partner, your friend or if you're doing business together, it's always best to be honest from the outset. As a team here, I know that we are always honest with our clients, and if we feel something isn't right, we'll tell them. To me, that's what strengthens our relationship and keeps our clients coming back to us.

Empathy is also vital in forming meaningful relationships, listening, and understanding each other's needs and points of view (this sounds like a marriage), but the same rules apply with business.

I agree that honesty and empathy are attributes that translate across all our relationships, so thank you for sharing those tips. You are a Mum to the cutest little boy - will you tell us a bit about him?

SS: Karam is almost 5 now and has just started Reception. He's incredibly energetic, kind natured, mature, caring, respectful, and a little mathematics genius already. Karam makes sure that everyone is included and is an absolute pleasure to be around. I know I'm biased in saying all of this, but he makes me want to be a better human every day.

A little mathematics genius? Perhaps a career in financial services or fintech is on the cards. Does being a Mum influence the way you approach work challenges in any way?

SS: Absolutely. It automatically gives you the discipline to be super organised. You have to be because the minute he wakes up, it's go go go, as I'm sure any parent feels. Being a mum has also taught me the art of patience (as you need to be with kids), and as a person, I always want everything done now, but I have come to realise that being patient in work and life is not a bad thing. Sometimes things take time, and if you take the time, you will achieve better results.

Being more patient is excellent advice and something we can all appreciate. It’s a busy world we live in and there are certainly times when I need to reset and take the time to slow down and focus on what's in front of me. Is there anything else exciting or unexpected about you (besides the tongue thing - haha!) that people would be interested to learn?

Apart from my incredible tongue trick, I did a skydive once at 10,000 feet which was the biggest adrenaline rush. I love painting and received an A in Art for my A-levels and then carried on to study Design at University; this is why I enjoy working in the creative industry. I also love hosting family and friends, which comes from being part of a big family (as anyone who attended my wedding will know – we had over 1,000 guests! )Finally, I also learnt to master the art of cocktail making during lockdown whilst others baked. I became an espresso martini extraordinaire, so I'll have to put on a masterclass for the team soon!

Please do; I'm sure the PS team are partial to an espresso martini. Last but not least, if psLondon could work with any client on earth, who would you want us to work with and why?

SS: Porsche, because I want one for my 40th Birthday, and it's essential to represent your client in every way. Jokes aside, Cancer Research UK or Macmillan UK. I know many people affected by cancer and would love to work with one of these top charities on a cause very close to my heart.

Sabrina’s Espresso Martini

What you’ll need:

2 ounces vodka

1/2 ounce coffee liqueur, I use Kahlúa

1 ounce espresso, freshly brewed

1/2 ounce syrup.

2 or 3 of ice cubes

Coffee beans to garnish

Method:

Pour all ingredients (aside from the garnish) into a cocktail shaker. To get it nice and frothy on top you need to shake, shake and shake the mixture until your arms hurt or you think they're about to fall off. It’s worth it!
